1.a. What do you mean by interconnected power system? Describe merits and demerits of the interconnected system.
Ans: The power system in which a number of generators of different area operated in parallel to meet the total load of these areas is called interconnected power system. In other language A power system in which two or more generating station transmission station and distribution system are interconnected together to supply a common load is called interconnected power system.
Merits of interconnected power system
- Availability increases:
When there is a fault in a system the power can be taken from another system. Hence continuity of supply can be maintained.
- Reliability:
Power quality can be maintained in an interconnected system, Distribution in a system can be insulated while giving continuity to rest of the system.
- Minimization of cost/Investment:
In term of back up plant interconnected system conserve the need of energy without installing a new generator.
- Overall efficiency is increased as power generated is not wasted as in case of independent system.
Demerits of interconnected power system
- Interconnection process is complex even a small variation in voltage frequency is not allowed.
- chance of faults spreading is more in interconnected system.
- maintenance cost is increased due to safety facility.
- communication is tedious and required in making every discussion.
- continuous monitoring is required.
